What's to get excited about!

The Shetland Islands are located at the northern most point of the United Kingdom, lying between Orkney, the Faroe Islands and it’s much closer to Norway than you’d think! This 7-day holiday will see us taking a flight from London to the Scottish mainland and then a connecting flight to the islands. Once there, we’ll check into our accommodation, the Bridge End Outdoor Centre, and make this our base for the entire week.

At the heart of this trip we will be learning about these fascinating islands and seeing as much wildlife as we possibly can, so our daily activities will revolve around these themes. Naturally, we will take advantage of the local knowledge available to us and shall be taking a guided tour around the capital of Lerwick where scenic and historical places of interest shall be highlighted and carefully explained. Also, given it’s a group of islands, a boat tour will also be arranged so as to see even more of what this archipelago has to offer. There’s also The Shetland Museum located at Hay’s Dock in Lerwick, which is most certainly worth a visit.

As for what wildlife we can expect to see whilst there …….. well, where do we start! There are numerous varieties of seabirds and marine mammals which either permanently or temporarily make these islands their home. Puffins, otters, orcas and seals are prevalent, as too are gannets, and kittiwakes. Plus, given the time of year we are visiting, porpoises and minke whales can regularly be spotted cruising through the calmer coastal waters. And of course, we couldn’t possibly visit the Shetlands without going to see the ponies that will forever be synonymous with the islands.

Where you'll be staying...

The Bridge End Outdoor Centre provides cosy accommodation in the Shetland Isles, on a stunning islet nestled in the heart of Bridge End, Burra, only a 20 minute drive from Lerwick.

Food, glorious food!

Our private accommodation for the week comes with a fully functional large kitchen and dining area, so we’ll be taking our very own Go Beyond chef on this one. Hearty breakfasts in the morning (yes, it will include Scottish porridge oats!), will fuel us up for the day ahead and packed lunches organised for when we’re out and about. Hot evening meals shall await us on our return complete with delicious deserts.

Travel

We will meet at a London airport and you will be supported on our return flights to and from the Scottish mainland. A connecting flight will then take us onward to Sumburgh Airport at the southern tip of the islands where we shall pick up our minibus. This shall then provide our mode of transportation to and from most, if not all, of our daily activities.

Itineray

Day 1 – 2 x flights to the islands, then minibus to our accommodation and settle in.

Day 2 – The Shetland Poney Experience

Day 3 – Guided tour of Lerwick

Day 4 – Visit the otter sanctuary

Day 5 – Rest Day – A day with no fixed schedule, allowing us to rest a little and decide between us how we’d like to spend the day.

Day 6 – Wildlife Boat tour in the Noss National Nature reserve

Day 7 – Shetland museum

Day 8 – Travel back to London

Your holiday will include the following:

• 7 night accommodation and all meals provided
• All entrance fees to all activities and sites.
